A scent that fills the room when you open the machine can be gone from a shirt by lunchtime, and still be in the bed linen on Thursday. Nothing has gone wrong. The fragrance has simply found different things to hold onto.
Fabric is not a neutral surface. Every fibre has its own structure. They can be porous or smooth, absorbent or resistant, scaled or straight. The structure decides how the fragrance is taken on, the length of time it stays, and the intensity it diffuses. The key to understanding how to scent a wardrobe is knowing which is which.
The fibre decides
Fragrance molecules are, for the most part, oily. They settle into surfaces rather than run off them. The two questions that matter are how much surface it offers, and how willingly it takes oil.
- Cotton: porous, irregular, with an enormous internal surface area. It takes up a great deal of fragrance and returns it slowly. The most generous fibre in the house.
- Linen: cellulose, like cotton, but smoother and more tightly ordered. It holds less and sheds sooner, which is part of why linen always seems to smell clean.
- Wool and cashmere: a protein fibre with overlapping scales along its length. Fragrance lodges between them and stays. Nothing in a wardrobe holds scent longer than a good knit.
- Silk: fine, smooth, close to non-porous. Beautiful to wear but the least retentive thing you own. The scent sits on the surface and is gone within a day.
- Polyester and nylon: strongly oil-attracting. They grip fragrance firmly, and everything else firmly too, which is why sportswear is the hardest thing in the house to make smell of nothing at all.
This is why a single scent composition can seem like three different scents across one wash. With the same detergent, the same dose and the same water different fabrics will smell differently across a week. After a week, a sweater might still be singing while the silk blouse has been quiet since Tuesday.
The pyramid does not survive the wash intact
A fragrance is built in three registers. Top, medium and base. Top notes such as citrus or pepper are small, light molecules that leave quickly. The heart sits beneath them and lingers for longer. The base layers such as musk, woods, or vanilla are heavy, slow, and reluctant to go anywhere.
On skin that structure unfolds across an afternoon. On fabric it unfolds across a week.
What you smell at the end of a wash is mostly the top. What you smell by Thursday is almost entirely the base.
Heat accelerates all of it. A hot wash and a tumble dryer will take most of the top notes with them before the garment ever reaches the drawer. Air drying keeps more of the composition intact, and is probably the largest single difference most people could make to how long a laundry scent lasts.
It also explains why four compositions behave so differently on the same sheet. Chambre Blanche is built over ambrette and white musk; Cedar Chalet over cedar wood and dry amber. Both are base-weighted, and both settle in for the long stay. Rose Garden opens on pink pepper and grapefruit. This is much brighter, more immediate, with more of its character spent in the first two days.
What follows from this
- Match the scent to the fibre, not the garment. A base-weighted composition rewards cotton and wool, where it has somewhere to live. A brighter one shows best on linen and silk, which were never going to hold anything for long.
- Dry in air wherever you can. More of the composition survives the journey.
- Resist over-dosing. A fibre has a finite capacity to hold fragrance. Past that point the excess simply rinses away, and the wash is no more scented for it.
- Store closed. A drawer or a wardrobe keeps scent contained. An open shelf lets it go.
None of this is complicated. It is mostly a matter of recognising that a sheet, a sweater and a silk shirt are three quite different materials with three quite different appetites. Then you just need to choose accordingly.
